Covering such products as the Amphibious Submersible Pond Pumps, and Blagdon Midi Submersible Pond Pumps these go directly into the water either in the pond or in some cases in the pond filter.
There are different types of submersible pond pumps, some that have a Pre-Filter fitted at the intake of the pump, which stops any debris clogging up the pump or damaging the impellor. The other type of submersible pond pump is a solids handling type like the Hozelock Aqua Force Submersible Pond Pumps, Blagdon Force Hybrid Pond Pumps and Stingray Submersible Pond Pumps which can accept debris up to a set size depending on the pump.
Generally, the smaller the wattage, the cheaper the pond pump will cost to run. But a lower wattage usually means the pond pump is less powerful, and if you are lifting water to a set height, such as up to a waterfall, you may have to increase the size of the pump to compensate for the loss of water/power at that height. It is in your best interest to properly determine what size your pond is and what wattage will be needed to best run your pond pump.
This is the distance from the surface of the pond to the highest point that the pump has to lift the water to, for filters or waterfalls. Keep this in mind when purchasing your pond equipment as this can affect the functionality of it.
When buying a pump for a pond waterfall or pond stream, you have to allow for the head (lift) and the width of the waterfall where it drops back into the pond. You need 300gph for every 6” wide mouth of the waterfall. e.g. 6”= 300gph or 12”= 600gph.
The TMC or Hozelock range will help to cut down on the green water / blanket weed in your pond; they will also help to sterilise the water. They all have a maximum flow rate so check your pump for this and don’t make the mistake of buying a UV Steriliser to suit the pond size; it must be to suit the flow of the pond pump being used. These are crucial to the health of your pond fish, as any toxic bacteria can cause illness or death in your fish, thus affecting the ecosystem of the entire pond.
There are many different types of Pond Filters on the market, very few of which offer low maintenance, and most have Foams inside them. The pond filters are an important part of pond maintenance equipment, as they will ensure your pond is clean and clear for your fish. However, the right pond filter will be determined by the size of the pond and the kind of fish.
Pond Pressure Filters:
Bioforce, Cyclone & Filter Clear Filters are ok on small ponds with low fish stocks. They can be put at any level to the pond because they are a sealed unit and will not leak or overflow. Most on the market contain foams and some other types of Media in them. For a simple pond filtration option, the pond pressure filters would be a great choice.
Pond Box Filters:
These filters generally have to go above the water level on the side of the pool or at the top of a waterfall / stream. If you don’t fit them correctly, they will overflow and could empty the pond in time. Most Pond Box Filters on the market contain foams and other types of media.
All in One Pond Filter:
These pond filters are mainly suited to smaller ponds, being compact in size. They combine the pump, UV and filter in one. These are great solutions as they are all-in-one but be careful to choose the right size for your specific pond.
A great example of this product type is the Blagdon Pond Safe range. These items are usually used near the pool side, allowing you to connect all of your electrical appliances, including items such as pond pumps, UV’s, pond lights or garden Lights, fish feeders, pond heaters, skimmers, air pumps and blanket weed removers. These boxes come with switches and are fused separately. Every pond should need some sort of electrical equipment so be safe when connecting them, and opt for one of our trusted ones in our pond electrical accessories range.
These help to remove debris from the water's surface. Some go into the middle of the pond and are fed by a submersible pump. Others are fitted into the pond wall and connected to a gravity filter system or a separate pump to be output as waste, or fed directly back into the pond. Some have an extra wide mouth. The pump inside the pond skimmer draws water in to it, and the weir on the outside creates surface tension to keep waste flowing smoothly into the skimmer. The water is then filtered through a mesh net which catches debris.
Pond Vacuums come in different forms but the best types are the electric powered ones, like the Hozelock Pond Vacuum which offers excellent value for money. This will be a very fast and effective way to clean your pond and ensure its maintenance. The vacuum is a crucial pond cleaning accessory that will remove the buildup of silt and sludge on the bottom of your pond, which can harbour toxins deadly to your pond fish.
There are basically five different types of fittings used in pond construction and they are:
Hose Fittings are used on the clear and black flexible hose sizes from 3/8” to 1 ½” mostly.
Overflow Fittings are mostly used for aquariums, also on ponds at times. Size 21.5mm solvent weld.
Pushfit Waste Fittings are available in three sizes, 32mm / 40mm / and 50mm. They are sealed with a rubber seal inside the fitting; they are not glueable. They are also known as 1 ¼” / 1 ½” and 2”.
Solvent Weld Waste Fittings are available in six sizes, 32mm / 40mm / 50mm / 82mm / 110mm and 160mm. They are glueable, but bear in mind that they will not fit the pushfit type above - although they state the same measurements, they do not measure the same. They are also known as 1 ¼” / 1 ½” / 2” / 3” / 4” and 6”. These are the most commonly used when building ponds.
Imperial Pressure Fittings are also solvent weld and are the very best fitting to buy. They have a thicker wall and harder wearing. They come in sizes up to 8” but are mostly used from 1” up to 4”. They will not fit any of the fittings listed above; in other words, you can’t mix and match the various types of fittings available. If you start with pressure, you need to continue with pressure; if you start with solvent weld, you need to use all solvent welds.
You can sometimes convert from one type of fitting to another, but it’s not always possible and it’s less messy if you stick to the same sort. We also stock Metric Pressure Fittings which are more commonly used in Aquarium Plumbing.
Air pumps come in many different sizes and can be used for creating large amounts of air for your pond, fish or the filter. For the smaller pond, there is the Pond Air Pumprange and for the bigger ponds, there are the Koi Flow Air Pump and the Hi Blow Air Pump ranges.
A bottom drain is the dome shaped product you sometimes see in the bottom of ponds. They are installed in larger ponds and are connected to the filter. The water from the pond is drawn into the drain and pulled into the filter. This action keeps the bottom of the pond continuously clean without ever needing to be cleaned with a vacuum. These can only ever be fitted to a gravity feed system.
